Defining Template sites and Templating

What's the difference between Template sites and Templating.

Templated web sites are pre-packaged web sites, typically containing a menu structure pointing to a few pages. When deciding wether to use a templated web site, there are some attributes about them to consider:

The first thing to consider is its structure. Many templated websites  seem to be rigid. You will also need to know how the navigation was  designed. Does it use graphical elements (almost always)? What if you want to change the menu structure then?

Template site designers do not need to consider any specific customer needs at this point,  they just come up with a pretty design that they hope will sell.

Was it designed to be flexible in other ways?  Such as what if you want to change the logo at the top;  will it skew the page display?

How do you feel about  other web sites having essentially the same look as your website?

What if you need to add e-commerce, a blog or some other functionality? again, will the framework  of your web site be flexible enough for these additions without major rework?

If you select a template site and modify it and now it does not line up correctly or worse  −  who will fix it.

These are just a few questions to take into consideration;  but certainly not all.

What do we mean by "Templating"?

You have decided to have your website  designed  from scratch. Your designer will now create a template stictly for your website presence only. This is called “templating”.  This is the page the other pages flow from.

Web site designers also "Template sites" but we do it at a point where the unique customers design needs have been considered and we do it with future flexibility in mind with the intent  we will be the "go to" person for updating the site, but also allowing for ease of updates by future developers.  With that being said, pre-made template designs are not always the best choice to convey your unique business to your potential client base.
