How to prevent computer viruses is a question often asked by pc owners. To be perfectly honest their is no way to actually be 100 % protected. The best you can do is to download an antivirus and do weekly scans to keep your computer clean . However, by taking the following measures you will pretty much eliminate any potential virus threat.

1. Always make sure you have a computer firewall active. If your computer is operating on windows xp you can make sure your firewall is on by going to start> control panel> security centerand seeing if to the right of "Firewall" it says on. If it doesn't say on, then under where it says "Manage Security Settings For" select Windows Firewall and check the box that turns it on.
If your computer has no firewall, there are some firewalls available for download. A good one to use would be ZoneAlarm which you can still download for free at the link provided at the bottom of this page.

2. Make sure you don't open emails from people you don't know and never download an email attachment if you are unsure of what it is. Many people get viruses from email attachments, even if the attachment if from a friend it may still contain a virus and your friend just may not know. Be careful!

3. When using a file share program such as limewire , make sure you are careful not to download suspicious files. They can contain viruses that will infect your computer.

4. Download Mozilla Firefox. Firefox is a web browser that is securer and faster than most other browsers. Firefox also offers a very cool add on called NoScript. NoScript prevents websites from running scripts on your computer. This little tool will virtually eliminate all viruses that can be transfered to you while you surf the web.

Doing these four things is the best advice on how to prevent computer viruses and you will find that when you do your weekly or monthly virus scan very little viruses will be found.
